Tips When Installing a Metal Security Door

by Tomothy Little

Security should always be a major concern for your property. One of the most cost effective ways to add security to your home is by installing a specialised door. It is possible to choose from a variety of security door kits, but metal can be a preferred option. Metal security doors are designed to be even more difficult to break into due to the durability of the material. It is essential that, before you begin installing a metal security door, you are aware of tips designed to make the installation process simpler.

Z-Bar

No matter what type of security door kit that you choose, it will come equipped with a Z-bar. This is a long bar that you will go along the height of the door opening and will secure the metal door in place. It is going to need to be cut to the exact size of your door. It is important that you have exact measurements before you cut the Z-bar to size. It is suggested that you measure your door opening by starting at the top of the door opening at the inner frame going to the inner frame at the bottom of the opening. You will also need accurate measurements for the width of the door as well. You need the z bar to be cut to this size to ensure that it fits in the opening securely. The Z-bar is essentially what attaches to the metal door and what allows it to be secured to the door frame using screws.

Hanging

Once you have the Z-bar cut to size, you can then screw the metal security door into place. There should be screws that are included within the door kit. You can use these screws to go into the hinge of the door and come out the Z-bar, which will allow the screws to securely go into the molding. Make sure that the screws go through straight the entire way into the molding. In most cases, screwing the screws into place will be a two person job, which means that one person will hold the door in place while the other uses a drill to secure the door with screws. Once all the screws are in place, you should be able to open and close the security door.

Header

The header is the last part of the security door that you will need to install in place. The header is the part that attaches to the top of the door frame and allows the door to open and close securely without any excess space. There should be holes that are pre-cut into the header that allow you to drive the screws into. The header should be screwed in right above the security door on the top of the door frame.
